Upgraden naar Windows 11 versie 24H2 op niet-ondersteunde hardware

Heb vandaag Rufus 4.6 beta gebruikt om Windows te updaten naar versie 24H2.

Is niet gelukt,

Boodschap; De processor van deze PC ondersteund geen essentieel onderdeel (SSE4.2).

Blijkbaar toch nog werk aan de winkel.

SSE4.2 is de POPCNT instructie. Jouw processor moet die instructieset aan boord hebben, anders kan versie 24H2 van Windows 11 niet geïnstalleerd worden. 
Dit is een nieuwe eis voor versie 24H2. Voor eerdere versies van Windows 11 was SSE4.2 nog niet vereist. 
Rufus gaat jou hierbij niet helpen. Deze eis kan niet omzeild worden. 
 

Uit nieuwsgierigheid: welke processor zit er in die pc? Ik vermoed dat die toch wel erg oud zal zijn.

Aanvulling voor @Eddy X op mijn vorige post: de maker van Rufus heet Pete Batard.

"Als je een processor hebt die ouder is dan tien jaar en geen PopCnt of SSE4.2 ondersteunt, dan zal Rufus 4.6 of 4.7 niet werken. In dat geval kun je wel gebruik blijven maken van Windows 11 23H2.

Batard liet verder weten dat hij geen plannen heeft om extreem oude processors te ondersteunen. Er zijn uiteraard mogelijkheden om deze oude hardware toch aan de praat te krijgen, maar de vraag is of je dat zou willen. Voor zulke systemen kun je beter bij Windows 11 23H2 blijven of overwegen om een Linux-distributie te installeren. Maar ieder zijn hobby."

 

Pete Batard gaat dus niet werken aan een versie van Rufus waarmee de eis voor SSE4.2 omzeild wordt.

Bedankt voor de info porrelaar.

De cpu is een AMD A6-3670 met Radeon HD graphics.

De pc zelf dateert van 2014.

Ondersteund wel SSE4A maar niet SSE 4.2.

Spijtig, want deze PC loopt nog steeds als een trein .

Ik had een tijdje geleden op een website gelezen dat SSE4A voor AMD processors het equivalent was van SSE4.2 voor Intel processors, maar die informatie blijkt niet juist te zijn. Ik vond zojuist andere informatie:

"AMD added the SSE4.2 instruction set to its Bulldozer processors in 2013—the POPCNT instruction was supported in earlier AMD CPUs, but only under the incomplete SSE4a instruction set, which Windows 11 doesn't appear to support. There’s no workaround for missing CPU instructions."

"AMD voegde de SSE4.2-instructieset toe aan zijn Bulldozer-processors in 2013. De POPCNT-instructie werd ondersteund in eerdere AMD-CPU's, maar alleen onder de onvolledige SSE4a-instructieset, die Windows 11 niet lijkt te ondersteunen. Er is geen oplossing voor ontbrekende CPU-instructies."

De pc mag dan dateren uit 2014; de processor in die pc kwam al wat eerder op de markt, namelijk in december 2011.

En daardoor is het voor jou niet mogelijk om de upgrade naar versie 24H2 uit te voeren. Je zult met versie 23H2 door moeten gaan. Die wordt nog ondersteund tot 11 november 2025. Je kunt dus nog een heel jaar vooruit...

This PC doesn't currenty meet Windows 11 system requirements

If you see the above prompt when trying to perform an in-place upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, with either a report of one, or both, of:

• This PC's processor doesn't support a critical feature (PopCnt)
• This PC's processor doesn't support a critical feature (SSE4.2)

Then it means that you won't be able to upgrade to Windows 11 24H2, period.

The requirement for modern CPU features is part of critical Windows 11 code, that Microsoft introduced with 24H2 and that cannot be bypassed.

You should also understand that there's only so much software developers, including myself and Microsoft, want to go to continue to support old platforms, when there exists new feature (in this case new CPU extensions) that can make the software better, and that there has to be a cutting point at which environments that do not support these new features have to left behind.

The way it works, and this is what Microsoft did, is you announce public system requirements (which, in the case of Windows 11, officially required using a modern CPU with PopCnt and SSE4.2 from the very first release), while still providing an unofficial "grace period", during which you might be able to apply bypasses to continue to run the software on hardware that does not meet these requirements... until the day where the software developer enforces them. And 24H2 is when they made the requirement for a CPU that supports PopCnt and SSE4.2 come into actual effect.

In short: You shouldn't expect to be able to run Windows on hardware it wasn't designed for forever. You got granted the ability to do so for a few years, but it should be obvious that this was always going to end eventually, and that, at some stage, you will have to upgrade your hardware to benefit of modern features (most of which aren't simply "gimmicks", but elements that actually improve the software).
